Subject: Kanchi Abhiyan. Pattachitra is a traditional, cloth-based scroll painting. This pattachitra shows the legend of King Purushottama of Odisha (1466 – 1497 CE) who wished to marry the princess Padmavati, but her father, the King of Kanchi would not agree. The offended Purushottama waged a war against Kanchi but was defeated. He prayed to Jagannatha to help him and was told in a dream to wage war again and accordingly marched towards Kanchi. On the way he was met by the milkmaid Manika who told him that two soldiers on horseback, one dark and the other fair had eaten curd from her and had given her a ring to present to the King and collect her dues. Purushottama recognized the ring as Jagannatha’s and knew that Jagannatha and Balabhadra had preceded him to Kanchi. Purushottama won the war, took Padmavati captive and finally married her. Kanchi Kaaveri is a popular story in Odisha and a popular relief in the jagamohana (audience hall) of the Jagannatha temple. Subject: Pattachitra Preparation. Pattachitra is a traditional, cloth-based scroll painting. Borders are an integral part of painting and this is drawn first on the painting on all the four sides of the patta consisting of two or three lines according to the size of the painting. The outlines of the figures are drawn first with pencil and then very thin lines in white are drawn. The body colors are then added followed by coloring the attires. Afterwards ornaments are added and colored. Outline of other motifs are then thickened with a thick brush with black color. Then small and fine decorative motifs are painted in white. Subject: Kaliya Dalana. Pattachitra is a traditional, cloth-based scroll painting. Kaliya Dalana is associated with the tale of Lord Krishna dancing upon and subduing Kaliya, a poisonous Naga living in the Yamuna river in Vrindavana. Here, Krishna is dancing over the hood of serpent Kaliya and his wives are asking Krishna for his mercy. The surface of Papier-mâché produces an ideal ground for painting, which is probably the reason the craft became popular in Odisha with its traditional pattachitra painters. This art in Odisha uses a fusion of paper, cloth rags and straw. It is pulped by hand after softening with water. Additives like multani mitti are added to the pulp as an adhesive and for providing a textured finish. Masks of many shapes, forms and sizes are a part of Odisha’s culture. In Puri, they are used for sahijatra which means street theater. The folk theater probably originated as a show of strength during Mughal invasion when people chose to participate in masks.
