Subject: Deer Bowl. This is a bowl made from papier-mâché technique. Papier-mâché is a French word for chewed paper. This craft was probably introduced during the Mughal reign. The surface of papier-mâché produces an ideal ground for painting, which is probably the reason the craft became popular in Odisha with its traditional pattachitra painters. Subject: Buddha seated in dharmacakramudra, turning the Wheel of Dharma gesture, detail. The upper portion of the back-slab is fashioned into a circular halo that is adorned with concentric bands, the outer one is a richly carved lotus creeper. Flying celestial figures are depicted on either side of the halo, and a pair of leogryphs flank the throne’s backrest.

This object was procured from Integrated Tribal Development Agency, Panposh (Assistant Director of Textiles, Sundargarh) that procured from Tasil Toppo.

Subject: Buddha in earth touching gesture or bhumisparsha mudra, detail of the upper portion. Around the head, carved in relief on the black slab is a circular halo which is decorated with two circular bands of rosettes and beads respectively. Over this halo, the foliage of the bodhi tree was shown which is now only visible on the top of the stone. The flying figures on both sides of the halo are celestials who shower down flowers on the Buddha after he conquers demon Mara.

Subject: Tulasi Brundavati Chaura. In Odisha, goddess Brundavati is worshipped in the form of Chaura, which is a small temple like structure adorned with sculptures and with a Tulasi plant overhead. Tulasi Chaura is mostly worshipped by married women who want blessings for leading a prosperous family life. Subject: Painted Coconut with Krishna, Mahisasurmardani and Heramba. This coconut shell is painted with Krishna, Mahishasuramardini and Heramba. This side of shell has iconography of Mahishasuramardini and 10 Mahavidyas painted over it. Coconut is a common fruit in Odisha, its endospermic shell is hard and durable. Subject: Lion. This is a lion carved in a mixture of wood and clay. An essential part of growing up in Odisha is toys, dolls, puppets and masks from wood. Often, gambhari or beech wood, the local wood is used for the carvings as it has a fine texture and is light-cream color though other woods may also be used. Subject: Jatri Pati. This pattachitra image shows elongated main shrine of Jagannatha with the triad in bada-singhara vesa inside it. Also shown inside the shrine are the Garuda pillar with Shiva and Brahma on either side of it. Panels on top and bottom depict the dashavatara of Vishnu. On either side, episodes from Krishna-Leela, Ram-Leela and temple activities are shown. Pattachitra is a traditional, cloth-based scroll painting. Jatri Pati (tourist pattachitra) is a kind of souvenir or memento collected by pilgrims to gift to others. It is made in a wide range of sizes and of different degrees of detailing but it basically shows a vertical temple plan. Subject: Chandana Yatra. Pattachitra is a traditional, cloth-based scroll painting. Chandana Yatra meaning Sandalwood Voyage in Sanskrit, continues for 42 days at Jagannatha, Puri. This festival indicates the worshiping of the deities with sandal mixed water. Chandana yatra is divided into two periods each of 21 days - Bahar chandana or Outer Chandana and Bhitar chandana or Inner chandana. During Bahar chandana, the representative images of Rama, Krishna, Madanmohan, Lakshmi and Biswadhatri are taken in a procession to Narendra tank. Also, images of Siva from five Shiva Temples known as "Pancha Pandavas" accompany them in a procession in the Narendra tank, the images are taken in well decorated boats and are worshipped.
