The inscription translates as: In the third year of Maharaja Kanishka, the third (month) of winter, the 22nd day, on thus date (specified as) above, was (this gift) of Friar Bala, a master of the Tripitaka and fellow of Friar Pushyavuddhi (namely an image of) the Bodhisattva and an umbrella with a post, erected at Benares, at the place where the Lord used to walk, together with his parents, with his masters and teachers, his fellows and pupils and with the nun Buddhamitra versed in Tripitaka, together with satrap Vanaspara and Kharapallana, and together with the four classes, for the welfare and happiness of all creatures.
