Subject: Durga. Durga is the goddess who is addressed as Uma-Parvati in her more passive role as consort and companion of Shiva. As the Powerful Durga, she is the Impassable One, destroyer of demonic forces that threaten the universe, renowned for slaying the buffalo demon. She is invoked for protection. In Tamil Nadu, she is believed to be the sister of god Vishnu and is often shown with his attributes of discus and conch shell. Here she stands resolutely upright, resting her weight equally on both feet and wears a rich array of ornaments, raising her front right hand in the abhaya gesture of protection and resting her left hand on her thigh.

Subject: Tahia. Tahia is used in Ghumura dance. Ghumura is a particular kind of drum which is played during the Ghumura folk dance of Kalahandhi district of Odisha. In Hinduism, according to one legend, the Ghumura was made by the union of the Damru of Lord Shiva and the veena of Goddess Sarasvati. It was used by Durga to defeat the king of demons, since then the drum has been used to signify imminent victory in an upcoming war.

Subject: Durga Madhab Plaque. Lord Jagannatha, the presiding deity of the Jagannatha temple is known as Madhaba. People of Odisha worship Durga and Madhab together for peace and prosperity and praise. This object has been procured by State Institute for Development of Arts & Crafts (SIDAC) Show House.

The Sudamala story from the Mahabharata, concerning the deliverance of Durga, is illustrated in a counter-clockwise direction around the monument.

Subject: Durga. This palm leaf engraving shows the warrior goddess Durga killing Mahisasura, the buffalo demon. The ethnic art form of palm leaf engraving essentially consists of inscribing designs on palm-leaf, mostly cut into standard sizes and held together with two wooden plank covers stringed through a hole in the center. The artists of palm leaf etchings use themes of mythological incidents, gods and goddesses figures with intricate details of hair style and dress, animals, trees etc.
