• Subu Heniin

    The Subu Henii, or the Mithun Chant, is performed on the first day of the Murung festival, and lasts for about 15 hours. The chant describes the beginning of the world and Apatani genealogy in order to summon spirits of prosperity. Only a skilled and respected nyibu can chant these verses. In this extract, the nyibu asks the sun to rise and spread light and heat over the world. Recorded in April 2004 in Biirii, Arunachal Pradesh.

    Dulu Ayu

    The Dulu Ayu (Meat Distribution Ayu) is chanted during the Murung festival. It is a form of verbal duelling to celebrate the sponsor of the festival. The chant tells the story of many different Murungs, hosted by different persons. The festivals are judged based how much meat is distributed.     Murung Ayu

    The Murung festival is a three-day festival, sponsored by individual families on a voluntary basis. During the festival, the villagers sacrifice a couple of mithuns or cows to bring prosperity to the host family. This ayu is chanted to explain the origin of the festival and the key themes of sacrifice, rice donations and meat distribution. Recorded on January 22, 2001 in Ziro, Arunachal Pradesh

    Myoko Ayu

    The Myoko festival is a three week long annual festival, sponsored by a village every three years. The Myoko Ayu, about a monkey hunt, follows the Sikki Ayu. It tells the story of how the ancestors established a relationship with the spirits through a pig sacrifice, and brought prosperity to the host village. It is a tale of invitation, ritual errors, deceit, and reconciliation, and involves Abo Tani. Recorded on January 1, 2003 in Mudan Tage, Arunachal Pradesh.
